- obligatory post about the oscar nominations -

No, I'm not gonna bitch about the fact that Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind only got two nods, or the fact that Paul Giamatti got snubbed for the 2nd year in a row. What I *will* bitch about is the fact that the Academy continues to waste acting noms on foreign language performances (i.e. Catalina Sandino Moreno in Maria Full of Grace). More on this later.

- lesson 6 -

Texan: Where are you from?
Harvard Grad: I come from a place where we do not end our sentences with prepositions.
Texan: Ok... Where are you from, jackass?
As an ESL FOB, I generally refrain from correcting people's grammar, but it really irks me when someone says "I feel badly." What do you, have damaged nerves?

- love makes you do the wacky -

During my first 15 years in North America (i.e. between 1990 and 2004), I've watched exactly one NFL game (SuperBowl '96). This past weekend, I watched two. Today, I'm dressed in blue. On Sunday, I'm tracking out to Woodinville to watch the Colts/Patriots game with 3 Indiana transplants. And I don't even like football.

This is what happens to Canadians when there is no hockey. And I don't even like hockey.

- how do you like *them* apples? -

Pretty disappointed with Schott's Food & Drink Miscellany so far. I did find this interesting piece of factoid under "Some Notable Apples," however:

Turing's Apple relates to Alan M. Turing (1912-54) -- a pioneer of early computing who was awarded the OBE for his work on the Enigma code. In June 1954, having been exposed as a homosexual, Turing committed suicide apparently by eating an apple that he had impregnated with cyanide. It has been suggested that Apple Macintosh computers were so named in tribute to Turing.
Unlike many of my friends who had to suffer through CS 100 back in college (er, excuse me, "university"), I never had the misfortune of studying Turing (the programming language). No siree, Bob. We CompEngs learned only the most useful and practical stuff. Y'all use Prolog on a daily basis, no?
