Paranoid Humanoid

- air, plus do you think i'm strange? -

For those who asked about the Air concert last Saturday: it was just aight for me, dawg. Although I was happy that they played so many songs off of Moon Safari (about half the set, I think), the acoustics were absolutely horrendous (waaay too much bass and echoing) and the show was far too short. I probably would've been pissed had I paid to be there (we were guest-listed, courtesy of Yolande).

Kate Havnevik, the opening act whom we skipped, was selling these funky t-shirts that said "Do you think I'm strange?" underneath a silhouette of her face. I briefly thought about buying one (it was only 15 bucks) but decided against it because I had never heard any of her music and didn't want to risk being associated with potentially suck-ass music. I've got a rep to maintain.

Later, I learned from one of her marketing postcard thingies that her biggest claim to fame was having several of her songs featured on Grey's Anatomy, so I know I made the right choice.

Gave up on getting Oprah tickets after hitting redial for almost 6 hours. She better not be giving away no cars in May.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Good-bye-a, Sanjaya.

- today, we are all hokies -

Some random thoughts:

Dan Shanoff writes: "[this video] says (and does) more than I (or anyone) could write about the Virginia Tech tragedy." Agreed.

Is it just me, or is the mainstream media totally overplaying the "shooter was Korean" angle? How is that even relevant? The Korean media is also obsessed with the fact that one of the victims was half-Korean. Idiots.

Did you know that the worst act of spree killing in history was committed by a drunken off-duty police officer in South Korea back in 1982? He killed 57 people, then blew himself up with a grenade. I have no recollection of this, however. You'd think I'd remember something like that.

Am I too cynical to think that Chris Timberfake Richardson's mention of VTech tragedy on last night's American Idol was a calculated move to get more votes?

Speaking of AI, everyone sucked last night with the exception of (who else?) Jordin and Melinda. Sanjaya was by far the worst of the bunch, but he'll probably live to see another week, even with Phil having a decent night. My pick to get the ax: Chris or LaKisha.

- run it! -

I successfully completed my first Sun Run. It's sort of a big deal considering the last time I ran a 10K race was in 10th grade. I've yet to grasp the concept of paying $35 for the "privilege" of running along with 55,000 people and getting a criminally hideous t-shirt that no self-respecting person would wear in public, however.

My not-so-ambitious goal was to finish in under one hour, and I clocked in at 52 minutes. And my should-be-surgically-repaired right knee is still holding up (albeit barely). Go me.

Next up: Indy Mini in 3 weeks. Hopefully I won't die.

- american justice -

Sanjaya lives on (as he should)! Haley goes home (as she should)! Yay!

And if you're one those people who think Sanjayarama is ruining American Idol:

1) Like the show had much credibility to begin with. 2 words: Taylor. Hicks.

2) Remember John Stevens? I do. (See my entry from April 21, 2004.) He made the top 6 despite being a much, much worse singer *and* having a personality of a cardboard cutout. At least Sanjaya is fun to watch. And don't give me this "he's robbing other, more talented contestants of their opportunities" bullshit. Do you know who finished 7th behind John Stevens in Season 3? Jennifer Hudson. Her career turned out just fine, don't you think?

And everyone was focused on the Ichiro vs. Dice-K match-up, but like I predicted, it was Felix Hernandez who stole the show. 1-hit shutout! And this kid turned 21 just 3 days ago. Wow.

- rhythm is gonna get you -

Dear producers of American Idol: please abolish the "Latin Night" from the show. Or at the very least, don't allow Gloria Estefan songs. Seriously.

Let's cut to the chase:

- My top 3 of the week: Jordin, Blake, Sanjaya (yes, really!)
- Bottom 3: Haley, Phil, Chris (for wearing a chain wallet alone)

I wanna see Haley go tomorrow. With the way she's been skanking it up, she'd be performing naked in a few more rounds.

And on a completely unrelated note: I'm super psyched about Dice-K vs. King Felix tomorrow! Nothing beats a great pitching duel.

- every little thing he does is magic -

With March Madness out of the way, I can now focus on one sport that matters: American Idol!

And if you're wondering how I manage to watch TV without owning one, that's because my building has a "community room" with a pool table and a TV, located conveniently on my floor. The room hardly ever gets used except by The Fat Asian Guy (as he's affectionately known to me and Matt) who seems to be there all the time watching cartoons. On those rare occasions I decide to watch TV (and beats him to the room), TFAG invariably shows up, stands at the door with a weird look on his face as if to say "I can't believe someone else is watching TV! *My* TV!" then makes a point of slowly walking through the room and exiting via the sliding doors on the other side that lead you to the courtyard. Once, he did this while holding a small dog.

Anyways, back to American Idol. Sanjaya aside, there really aren't any true standouts this season. Sure, that no-neck lady can sing like it's nobody's business, but there's no way she will win. Besides, that "omg, I'm so humble! I have no idea how good I am!" shtick is really wearing thin, no? Simon seems to think that the beatbox boy's got it going on, but he also thought Gary Barlow was too fat to be a star, so what the fuck does he know?

- My top 3 of the week: Melinda, Chris and Jordin.
- Bottom 3 of the week: Phil, Gina and Haley.

Phil will probably get the boot; Jordin is still my pick to win it all.
