Paranoid Humanoid

- he blinded me with scientology -

Last night's Oprah was a rerun of that infamous Tom Cruise appearance (yes, the one which was chronicled in Dave White's disturbingly accurate play-by-play).

Well, if you think *that* was surreal, you should've seen Mr. Cruise on this morning's Today Show, where he became extremely hostile when asked about anti-depressants and comments he had made about Brooke Shields. He went on to say that psychiatry is a "pseudo-science" and that "there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance." Personally, I think he needs to take some lithium to calm his bipolar ass down, but hey, who am I to argue with such a renowned expert? (As he told Matt Lauer, "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.")

The most surreal (and unintentionally funny) moment on TV this week, however, belongs to I Want to be a Hilton when that Asian chick spontaneously burst into Moment Like This in a feeble (yet somehow successful) attempt to stay on the show. Kathy Hilton and other contestants' reactions? Priceless.

I finally figured out what it is that makes James Gandolfini so irresistible. (And it ain't the pleated pants.)

- eternal sunshine of the spotless mind -

Some of my favs from Oxymoronica:

Some people can stay longer in an hour than others can in a week.
- William Dean Howells

Lonely people talking to each other can make each other lonelier.
- Lillian Hellman

The trouble with New York is it's so convenient to everything I can't afford.
- Jack Barry

This is the most exciting place in the world to live. There are so many ways to die here.
- Dennis Leary, on New York City

People sometimes divide others into those you laugh at and those you laugh with. The young Auden was someone you could laugh-at-with.
- Stephen Spender, on W.H. Auden

A genius with the IQ of a moron.
- Gore Vidal, on Andy Warhol

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't.
- Erica Jong, How to Save Your Own Life

A celebrity is a person who works hard all his life to become well known, then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized.
- Fred Allen

Life is a tragedy full of joy.
- Bernard Malamud

A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it.
- Mark Twain

The thought of suicide is a great consolation: with the help of it one has got through many a bad night.
- Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil

The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural.
- Calvin Klein

In case you haven't noticed, Paranoid Humanoid is now 25% bigger! (The font size, that is.) Compare that with your regular fabric softener.

Other things that are currently making me feel warm and fuzzy all over:

- the saddest movie in the world -

If this movie doesn't make you cry, there's something seriously wrong with you.

- Christian, on Grave of the Fireflies
So, apparently there's something seriously wrong with me. I mean, it was "touching" and all (though in a rather cloying/manipulative kind of way), but ultimately it didn't work for me because 1) the narrative is so choppy that it fails to generate any kind of momentum, and 2) the movie is so relentlessly and constantly depressing that you just become sad from the start and stay there -- it wasn't exactly an emotional rollercoaster.

And in case you're wondering, the last movie that made me cry was Stella, which I saw with my mom waaaay back in 1991. We both bawled our eyes out during the final scene when Stella watches her daughter's wedding from afar. (Oh, shut it.)

- siff, shmiff -

3 (non-SIFF) movies I kinda want to see:

  • Memories of Murder: Playing for one week at the Northwest Film Forum starting June 10th! I missed this at SIFF 2004 because I had to attend David's wedding.
  • 3-Iron: Playing at the Varsity. Ki-duk Kim's Bad Guy (and The Isle to a slightly lesser extent) was one of the most intense and uncomfortable movie-going experiences I have ever had. Then again, I absolutely hated the vastly overrated, unbearably pretentious and excruciatingly tedious Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. Hmmm, maybe I'll wait for this on DVD.
  • Kontroll: Also at the Varsity. Hannah saw it at VIFF 2004 and loved it. It's coming out on DVD soon enough, however.

- confessions, part iii (and beyond) -

The New York Times writes about PostSecret, which has become my favorite method of wasting time on Mondays. It's sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes disturbing, and always fascinating.

Rounding off my top 5 fav blogs:

  • Dave White Knows: 3 times more addictive than crack-cocaine and way, way funnier than anything else you'll find on the internets.
  • Lifehacker: Kinda like Boing Boing, only useful.
  • Overheard in New York: You can't make this shit up, biotech!
  • Snowcat: I think she's my long lost twin.
