- mr. a-z -
I just bought a CD for the first time in almost a year.
And speaking of Jason Mraz, I attended a Fishbowl for Tristan Prettyman yesterday (she has a duet with Mr. Mraz on her upcoming debut) and really really liked her. Very laid-back pop à la Jack Johnson. She also did a kick-ass cover of Britney Spears' Toxic. Check it out y'all.

- the day after -
Quote du jour, courtesy of one of our 2PTLs:
If you ask me (and thanks for asking!), nothing says "the software industry is right for me!" than wearing a company-provided t-shirt the day after it's given away.
Current count of people wearing the company picnic t-shirt: 7.

- seattle hope -
I caught a bit of Grey's Anatomy last couple of Sundays. It's not a bad show, but come on -- is it too much to expect a little bit of originality? If I wanted to watch ER, I would watch ER. (And I haven't done that since 1996, when Dr. Lewis left the show.)

- wings that can't fly -
There are some movie scenes that are so breathtakingly stunning that they make me feel suffocated. Literally. This is a common occurrence with Wong Kar-wai (well, Christopher Doyle, really) films, most notably the Iguazu waterfall scene in Happy Together
.
Another example is the green rice field scene in All About Lily Chou-Chou
, which I finally got around to watching again after being wowed by it at SIFF 2002. Despite its many flaws, it is one of the most disturbing, poetic, hypnotic, and beautiful coming-of-age films I've ever seen. Was being 14 really that horrible?

Holy shit -- I just saw Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau walking down Broadway.

- and then there was one -
Frito, my first Amazon officemate and the coolest co-worker ever, is leaving The Bookstore just 2 weeks shy of his 8-year anniversary, making me as the lone remaining member of my original team from 4.5 years ago. I'm sad.
He gave me these as a going-away gift though. All 5 of them! He also threw this in as a bonus (randomly yet heavily bookmarked) and suggested that I casually take it to meetings to freak out other co-workers.
We'll miss ya, Frito.

- gucky, part deux -
I can't believe Liberace was gay. I mean, women loved him! I didn't see that one coming.
- Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery
I just finished flipping through this book. Did you know that the following people (some of them, only allegedly) were disco dancin', Oscar Wilde readin' Streisand ticket holding' friends of Dorothy? I didn't. (Though I was hardly surprised.)
- Socrates
- Walt Whitman
- William Shakespeare
- Emily Dickinson
- Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
- Eleanor Roosevelt
- Florence Nightingale
- and of course, Liberace
What did shock me, however, was how many of the so-called "Gay 100" were pedophiles and/or died of AIDS. Lovely.

- live to tell -
Things I learned during my vacation:
- You can never go wrong with Kruder & Dorfmeister.
- But that "Bombercladd" song has got to go.
- You can never go wrong with Abba either.
- Disco soundtracks make great driving music.
- Always bring at least one George Winston CD when travelling. We learned this the hard way.
- I fucking rock at building fires: a perfect combination of my engineering roots and my pyro tendencies. (Or, as Matt would say, pyro roots and engineering tendencies.)
- I also rock at making pancakes. I'm the multi-talented Beyoncé.
- The actress who played Julie the Cruise Director now works at the Harvard Market QFC in the cheese section. She wished us a happy cruise as we headed out for our 4th of July Flotilla.
- The best time to go shopping at IKEA is the Gay Pride weekend when all good homos are out celebrating. I have never seen the place so empty before.
