- happy no year -
(No "year in review" post this year because 1) I'm lazy and 2) there aren't any good memes going around. That "first sentence of every month" meme, which everyone seems to be doing, is très lame, I must say.)
I finally broke down and bought an iPod today. Yeah, I know I said I would *never* buy one, but I did have good reasons:
- I recently started using iTunes instead of WinAmp, and while it is a monster memory hog, it's got everything I want from a music player.
- Do you have any idea how hard it is to shop for non-iPod accessories or peripherals? Didn't think so.
- Today is the last day of my Amazon employee discount. With all the promos, I got mine for $200. Try to beat that, bitches.
Oh, I seem to have scored a pretty cool part-time job. Still lots of paperwork and such to be completed before it's official, so stay tuned for updates.

I had a very romantic (but disturbing-in-retrospect) dream last night. I blame the codeine.

I've got the worst case of post-vacation depression, ever. It's Boxing Day and I didn't even go shopping. Yeah, *that* bad.

Oh, yeah. Bloody hell. I'm sweating in here. Roasting. Boiling. Baking. Sweltering. It's like a sauna. Furnace. You can fry an egg on my stomach. Oh, who wouldn't lap this up? It's ridiculous. Tremendous. Fantastic. Fan-dabby-dozy-tastic.
- Gal Dove, Sexy Beast
Back to the cold and rainy Pacific Northwest after an incredible week on the Big Island. Fan-dabby-dozy-tastic, indeed.
Some of the ono memories (along with some not-so-ono ones):
- Papakolea Green Sand Beach: Absolutely spectacular. The 2.25 mile hike leading up to it wasn't exactly easy, but I think it made it even better. Definitely *the* highlight of the trip.
- What's Shakin': Amazing fruit smoothies and onolicious fish burgers. Mmm mmm mmm mmm good. Also a great place to get fresh and cheap papayas and avocados.
- Almost running out of gas at the summit of Mauna Kea (that's 13,800 feet high) with the closest gas station at least 50 miles away. I nearly had a heart attack.
- Hawaiian-style Christmas carols (including Matt's fav "Santa Baby, hurry to my hale tonight") that were constantly on the radio.
- Kilauea Volcano craters, picnic at Kealakomo, and the drive down to the fresh lava flow / plume viewing. The hike was brutal at times (especially the return trip in pitch black), and I was bummed that we couldn't get closer to the liquid hot magma.
- Ahalanui: A geothermically heated pool only a couple of miles from our homebase.
- Waipi'o Valley: One of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen. We weren't adventurous enough to venture down the hill, however.
- Those nasty flying cockroaches that are bigger than your thumb. Gross! I was surprisingly calm about all those geckos running around inside the cottage though.
- Putting 1,200 miles on the rental car, about 50 of which was by me. Yep, I drove a car for the first time in 5 years.
- Grocery stores whose prices make Urban Unfair and Whole Paycheck seem like Costco. 6 bucks for a quart of OJ? Good grief.
- Surprisingly good Pahoa restaurants: Ning's and Clemente's.
- Crazy Hawaiian names -- as in "the Wikiwiki Mart at the corner of Kamehameha and Kanoelehua." Try to say that three times real fast. I double dare you, motherfucker.
- Kehena Black Sand Beach: Would've been nicer without the clothing-optional crowd though. How come nudists are almost never attractive?

See, people thought I was crazy when I wrote a Perl script to parse my movie diary and sort everything by title, rating and date, and then imported the resulting data into Excel, but clearly, that was time well spent.

- say it ain't so -
Apparently there is a chance that the Rocket may end up in Boston again. I'm a little torn about this one.
3 arguments for:
- This will put an end to "which cap will he wear to Cooperstown?" debate once and for all.
- I've always wanted a Clemens Red Sox shirt/jersey to complete my collection. I tried to find one back in 98 during my Boston visit (during his 2nd Cy season with the Jays) and all I got were dirty looks.
- To quote Dan Shanoff, "it'll be amusing to those of us not in Red Sox Nation to clock how quickly the die-hard fans flip-flop their long-standing loathing to reembrace Clemens."
3 arguments against:
- He should re-sign with the Yankees.
- Better yet, he should re-sign with the Astros in mid-season, which should keep him healthier for the playoffs.
- I really don't want to have to root for the BoSox.

- aftermathematics -
Tequila shots always seem like a great idea at the time you're doing them, but they never are. When am I gonna ever learn that?
After hours in the laundry room, I have managed to get everything spotless and smelling extra fresh again. Yay. No amount of Tide or Dryel could ever clean away the dirty, icky feeling I got after reading The Sluts by Dennis Cooper, however. Ugh.
